Confectioner Milton Hershey changed the world when he established his chocolate business in Pennsylvania back in 1894. Having key goals of producing quality chocolate while also enhancing the lives of other people, Hershey developed an iconic brand and was known for being a generous philanthropist.

In 1909, he established a boarding school for children from low-income families that was free of charge, to which he later donated all his fortune. In the midst of the Great Depression, not only did Hershey build his chocolate factory, producing jobs for 600 workers, he also constructed a model community offering those workers places to live, a bank, public schools, a theater, parks, a tram system and a sports complex.

To determine the third annual ranking of Canadian employers with diverse work environments, Forbes collaborated with Statista, the market research company, to survey about 40,000 workers in Canada from companies that have a minimum of 500 employees. Those who took part in the survey rated their companies anonymously on factors associated with diversity, such as ethnicity, disability, LGBTQ+ equality, age and gender.
Furthermore, the best practices of each company regarding diversity were evaluated, and this information was combined with the results of the survey to obtain each employer’s score. In the end, the 200 employers with the highest scores were included in the final list.
First place this year went to the Hershey Company, which promotes togetherness and has been implementing a plan to increase employment and advancement of persons with disabilities, women, LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color.
In the #2 spot on Forbes’ list is Microsoft (rising from #6 in 2023). Kathleen Hogan, the Chief People Officer at Microsoft, states that the company is dedicated to creating “an exceptional place to work” through “not only meeting the foundational needs of our employees, but helping them to also feel valued and fulfilled at work.”
